Summer doldrums in the triangle, NC

Hey team "laserhealing" I apologize for not getting back to you sooner with the latest, greatest on our class IV Litecure laser. It has been a busy summer full of wheeling and healing.

It has been my pleasure to work with and use the laser on some of the triangle areas finest swimmers. I love it when I mention what the laser is and how it works to one of our great area coaches and they respond with "I've used it and it worked for me." Such was the case recently, I'm happy to report.

It makes sense that top level coaches and athletes are early adapters to great new technologies that keep athletes in the game. They make it their business to stay on top of the best drugless and surgery-free methods to keep their teams on target.
Let me suggest that you might gain from their experience and insight by coming by the office, remember you can check it out at RaleighMidtownChiropractic.com

We will gladly show you how it works and why I like to say
"You have to see it to believe it and when you see it you won't believe it." Which means, it really works!
Take care and thanks for reading!

Tennis Elbow Pain in Raleigh Area

Hello Doc Hightower,
I am an avid tennis player on the senior circuit. I have had right elbow pain for the better part of a year. It used to only hurt when I play, now it hurts all the time. I went to my family doctor who gave me some medicine (anti-inflammatory)and it put a dent in it but as soon as I stopped the pain came back. I have a tournament coming up. Should I give your laser a try, my friend says I should?

Old but active in Raleigh :=)

Dear Active (I couldn't bring myself to call you "old")

Since you have seen your MD for this condition I'll go with the diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis or tennis elbow. I suggest you come in and let me see if there are any contributing factors (such as dislocation of the radial head or impingement of the nerves in the neck that supply the elbow)which may be hindering your recovery.

It is more difficult to resolve injuries mid-season, as you continue to play. However, professional athletes do it all the time. One tool that many pro teams are using for mid-season injury resolution is the Litecure Laser, like we use in our office. It is very helpful for problems such as yours.

So, come on in or call the office at 919-873-2225 and schedule a consultation. We'll rule out or address any contributing factors then use the amazing Litecure laser to get you back on your game!

Help! TMD pain in Raleigh

Dear Dr. Hightower,

My dentist suggested I contact you about a laser that you are using for face pain. I use a bite guard at night but my jaw and face still hurt. I have talked to a neurologist who said it wasn't trigeminal neuralgia. It seems to be my jaw mostly. Do you think it could help?

Hurting in Raleigh

Dear Hurting,
The class IV laser can be very helpful with TMD pain. We are currently working with a man who has TMD pain and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). He has suffered with these problems for many years. I have been adjusting and massaging his neck and TMJ with some success, as he says "you've helped more than anyone else." But a low grade pain always persisted, sometimes getting worse with the weather.

Well, after about 5 treatments with the Litecure lser we had "knocked the edge off" and after about ten her reported that "it the best it has felt in a long time.

So, to your case, Hurting. You have obviously been dealing with this and pursuing treatment options for many years. While it is not possible to say unequivocally that the Lite cure laser will fix your facial pain, it is reasonable to expect that a course of treatment would be a prudent investment in finding out.

I suggest we work together and monitor your level of pain. We will approach the problem from multiple perspectives, via massage, adjustment, possible electric stimulation and laser therapy. You will know in short order and for a reasonable cost whether it is working for you.

As always, know that we build our reputation at Midtown on honesty and solid customer service. We practice "golden-rule" healthcare, treating you with the same professionalism and courtesy we expect when we seek help for difficult problems.

So, let me know, book through the website RaleighMidtownChiropractic.com or call us at 873-2225 and lets see if we can melt that pain in your face away with the healing power of the class IV laser.

Thanks, and I hope we can change your sign on moniker before next you write!

laser for acupuncture?

Doc,

I heard you speak the other night and you said something like "this laser is like high test acupuncture". I was trying to explain it to my husband and I couldn't get that part right. Do I have that right and what did you mean by that?

Billie W.

Dear Billie,
I'm delighted you were listening to my presentation. Photobiology, specifically the use of lasers for assisting the healing process is a relatively new and sometimes confusing thing to try to explain. So, first let me say that YES, you got that right.

The use of a class 4 laser of the right energy and wavelength is well documented from a Western perspective. The mechanisms by which coherent, laser light accelerates cellular respiration and healing are well researched and understood. Most of the patients we treat with the our class 4 Litecure laser are interested in reducing their pain and improving their function. We enjoy watching those people do exactly that as they progress through their treatment plans.

From the Eastern perspective, In my opinion, laser therapy can be much more than that. I was speaking about how humanity has finally elucidated the mechanism of acupuncture. We finally know how it works!!! (for a detailed explaination check out Oschmann's Energy Medicine in Therapeutics and Human Performance) It is the desire of the acupuncturist to create or restore a coherent field in the living matrix (Oschmann's words) the system of subtle energy the Chinese call Chi.

We have been using laser therapy as a healing tool since 2002 at Midtown Chiropractic. As an acupuncture tool it makes great sense conceptually. Rather than trying to subtly induce your existing Chi, your living matrix, towards coherence why not just create a perfect coherent field and pump it directly into the system? Again, it fits the current, technologically verified models of how energy moves in the body that laser light would work well to do that.

I personally found reality lagging behind this theory in terms of clinical outcome, however. Some patients responded well to laser-based acupuncture but not as many as I would have like or hoped.

That has changed with the addition of the Litecure class 4 laser to our practice. It turns out people far smarter than myself have been studying how much and what wavelengths of light are most effective in initiating cellular response. My earlier class 3a laser is far too weak for creating the types of healing that we see routinely with the Litecure.

So I'm tickled pink that reality has caught up to prediction. It is very gratifying for both the clinician and the patient to be able to say, "Now that your pain is so much better, let's use the laser to work on your insomnia, or your tinnitus or your indigestion. It's great fun to say because it so often works.

In summary, many people are interested in finding drugless ways to first relieve their pain and then to improve their health. We are glad to be able to work with our patients to help them in that way. So yes, I said Class 4 laser therapy is like high test acupuncture.

I look forward to showing you why next time we see each other, Billie. Thanks for listening and tanks for asking.

Laser therapy in animal medicine?

Doctor H,
I Googled the class 4 laser and a whole bunch of stuff about animals comes up. That seems strange to me. Why is that?

Nita W.

Dear Nita,
That does seem strange perhaps but if you know why it makes perfect sense. Vets are not usually limited by insurance reimbursement schedules and vet tools do not have to meet FDA guidelines, generally. Plus, Veterinarians tend to be very smart people so, that all adds up to mean that they are often early adapters to new technology.(A fact to consider...there are 4 medical schools in NC(Duke,UNC, Wake Forest, ECU) but only one vet school (NCSU).....which do you think is harder to gain admission to?)

Because of their willingness and ability to explore new technologies we have great data about the effectiveness of Laser Therapy. This data has the added advantage of being free from arguments about the placebo effect. I recently read "Laser Therapy for the Equine Athlete" and I can assure you the equestrian world is using Class IV technology, like the Litecure we use, and getting amazing results. I have seen x-rays of non-union fractures which, judging from the reaction of the experts reviewing the case, are very tricky to heal.

Also, rest assured that the Litecure laser is very safe and remarkably effective in treating a wide range of pain types. The FDA has cleared the technology for human use and for that we should all thank our four legged friends and the amazing docs that keep them healthy.

Laser therapy for sinusitis

Hey Doc H, I always get stuffy and congested in the spring and fall. I take way too much Claritin which I'm sick of. Plus, the stuff is expensive. Can laser light do anything to get me feeling better or help me use less of the stuff?
John D, Raleigh

Dear John, (Hey, my first "Dear John" letter!)
You are in luck. The Class 4 laser is a great tool for improving sinus health and relieving congestion. Relief happens rather fast so its fun to work with people like you who, I must assume, have suffered with the problem for a while.

Laser light, of the right wavelength and intensity, such as with the Lite Cure we use (Litecure.com) helps decrease sinus inflammation by stimulating the mitochondria of the cells lining the nasal passages. This specific energy basically kicks the cells into metabolic overdrive. What you will feel is, as one recent patient described it, "like it just melted the congestion away."

Like any therapy which works with the rhythms of the body, chronic conditions take a while longer to heal. Typically 12-15 visits are needed to resolve chronic sinusitis though you will feel relief much quicker than that.

Good Luck, John (if thats your real name ;) )

Laser therapy for plantar fasciitis

Dear Dr. Hightower,
I've heard you are the local expert on laser therapy for pain relief. I have sever pain in the soles of my feet when I first walk after resting. It goes away pretty quick but it hurts bad for the first dozen or so steps. What is it and do you think laser therapy could help me?
-sign me "hobbled"

Dear Hobbled, Your symptoms are classic for plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a thick, inelastic lining on the bottom of the feet. When you rest it contracts. The first few steps are painful as it is stretched back out.

This is a vexing and common problem. Traditional approaches, such as injections and steroids, are of limited success, in my experience.

We have had a lot of success at Midtown Chiropractic using our class 4 laser for this problem. The treatment we recommend combines stretching the fascia, strengthening the intrinsic muscles of the feet and using a Litecure laser to reduce pain and inflammation.

This multifaceted approach can reduce your pain but perhaps more importantly, stops the problem from coming back. It will take between 6-20 visits depending on your weight and how long you have had the problem. Call our off at 919-873-2225 or email me directly at dochightower@gmail.com if you need more specifics.

Thanks for asking and i hope I've shined a light on how to get walking again!
